21st century architecture - 2006/01/10 01:58I saw the plans for the Phoenix development and am certainly in favour of regenerating that area of town.Obviously bad regeneration could harm Lewes in various ways, but also if we fail to develop the town and attract new people and activity-both cultural, civic and business, then the town will become as dead as a dodo within a couple of decades, which is what has happened in so many other market towns. One of the things that stands out about Lewes is how full of life it is-not just a museum town full of cutesy olde-wordliness.
Every other generation of Lewesians have left us with some gorgeous examples of architecture from their time(apart from those responsible for the ESCCbuilding of course!) Can we make sure that we leave some great examples of 21st century architecture for the future inhabitants of the town?
Lets act in a way that invests in a lively future for the town and its people, rather than just wanting to hold things back and keep it all the same as it ever was.
