Environmental issues - 2006/01/03 19:12
Reading and listening to the news over the past few days about gas supplies from Russia, and in particular, the input on the Today programme on radio 4 today from Brian Wilson, a former energy minister, about our need to diversify our energy sources, it seems to me that we must press for maximum renewable energy input to this and any other schemes in Lewes. Lewes is a forward thinking council in giving grants for renewable energy so surely it makes semse to insist developers of all new properties include such things as solar, heat pumps and wind energy in their schemes. Large developments like the Pheonix have an even better opportunity to incorporate innovate renewable energy sources. For the energy which cannot be supplied by renewables, there is an opportunity to install community energy souces so as to minimise the impact on greenhouse gas emmision.
I recently was on a walk with Lewes Footpaths Group around Ardingly reservoir ans was horror struck at the low water level. We may well face a severe water shortage over the coming years and once again there is an opportunity to ensure that all properties incorporate water saving devices, including reusing grey water (although reading some web sites on this there does appear to be some doubt about the economics of this)
So my point is lets press for maximum concern for the environment with this and other developments, lartge or small, in Lewes. Lets become a green town which cares for the long term fate of the planet.
