Harry Harmer   Phoenix tree preservation orders - 2006/05/07 11:10 Lewes District Council have made a provisional tree preservation order on trees running along Phoenix Causeway from Green Wall to the bridge. They have done this 'because they are considered to 'contribute to the visual amenities of the area.' The Council have asked for written objections or representations by 16 May 2006. The Order has been made on two groups of trees, G1 and G2, with a gap roughly in the middle on the basis that there are no significant trees in the gap but only shrubs. There are, in fact, trees in that area, back from the road on the edge of the Phoenix Industrial Estate and of similar types to those included in the Order. While we support the TPO, we consider an argument should be put to the Council to include the trees in the gap and that G1 and G2 should be linked to make one group. When we asked for the TPO to be made we said that the specific value of the trees running from Green Wall to the river are that they: * are established trees and shrubs * are an important visual amenity * are home to threatened species of birds (as on list by RSPB) and provide shelter and food to a variety of other wildlife * provide a fundamental buffer against pollution and noise. We said that the trees offer amenity value to the surrounding area, and their loss would have a significant impact on the environment and its enjoyment by the public. The trees are visible and accessible from public places and ameliorate both visibly and by absorbing carbon dioxide to the surrounding urban landscape. We have drafted a letter to the Council supporting the TPO but asking them to extend it on the grounds we have set out above, and not solely on the basis of 'visual amenity'. It is on 27 Norway Maple, four Ash, ten Sycamore, four Field Maple and four Cherry Trees. At a meeting last week regarding the Pheonix devlopment effect of the flood issues of the Pells area, Angel / Atkins proposed to build a wall 2m high at points along the Pelham Terrace / Pells pond. There are some beutiful trees along the grassed area of the Pells pond and although the consultant engineers seems unaware of these whilst drawing up their proposals, promised to look into this issue(hire some sort of ...oligist, to look into root systems etc)Do you know if there are any existing preservation orders on the trees in this area & if not, can they be protected to ensure this issue is not overlooked and treated correctly?. The best thing is to contact the Lewes District Council Tree and Landscape Officer Daniel Wynn (who has been very helpful during this process), tell him what trees you're concerned about, ask him if there is already a TPO on them and, if not, make a case to the council (through him) to put an order on them.
