Lewes Matters Discussion Forum

Environmental issues - 2006/01/03 19:12 Reading and listening to the news over the past few days about gas supplies from Russia, and in particular, the input on the Today programme on radio 4 today from Brian Wilson, a former energy minister, about our need to diversify our energy sources, it seems to me that we must press for maximum renewable energy input to this and any other schemes in Lewes. Lewes is a forward thinking council in giving grants for renewable energy so surely it makes semse to insist developers of all new properties include such things as solar, heat pumps and wind energy in their schemes. Large developments like the Pheonix have an even better opportunity to incorporate innovate renewable energy sources. For the energy which cannot be supplied by renewables, there is an opportunity to install community energy souces so as to minimise the impact on greenhouse gas emmision.

I recently was on a walk with Lewes Footpaths Group around Ardingly reservoir ans was horror struck at the low water level. We may well face a severe water shortage over the coming years and once again there is an opportunity to ensure that all properties incorporate water saving devices, including reusing grey water (although reading some web sites on this there does appear to be some doubt about the economics of this)

So my point is lets press for maximum concern for the environment with this and other developments, lartge or small, in Lewes. Lets become a green town which cares for the long term fate of the planet.

Re:Environmental issues - 2006/01/12 15:41 In response to Gordon’s post I like many others welcomed Norman Bakers new year message in the Sussex Express singling out climate change as the biggest threat facing us and also his desire to “keep a close eye on planning proposals.” With the biggest development Lewes is likely ever to see proposed some 800 metres from his doorstep there lies a golden opportunity as Lib Dem environment spokesperson to show visionary leadership in regard to the environmental footprint of this or any subsequent proposals for the area.
At the end of the Town Meeting in December the mayor left us in no doubt that this brownfield site would be developed and Angel properties ambitious outline plans are still scheduled for the end of January. My ongoing meetings with Charles Style and Angel representatives show a willingness to take these environmental issues seriously
and an approach to the excellent Lewes based architects BBM sustainable design to explore possibilities is welcome news. Although there is environmental legislation in place with new building legislation regarding CO2 emissions soon coming into force, will the developer, architects and builders simply adhere to regulations ,cutting the odd corner here and there or create a radical innovative and visionary model for living that the town can be proud of.
Let us hope our MP leading from the front will champion the latter.

Re:Environmental issues - 2008/02/18 00:46 although this seems too ridiculous to be true, I have been told that part oft he Flood defence stategy that Charles Style has provided is that flodded residents should make their way to the first floor and be winched out by helicopter!

Is this true, and what 'professional' did he pay to wrtie this!?

Re:Environmental issues - 2008/02/18 18:36 'Tis true, Sashka. The report on Angel's proposed industrial estate on Malling Brooks says: "In this event [a serious flood] occupants will need to travel to the first floor and await emergency rescue by air.” This is about the piece of land where the flooding was deepest in 2000. The report was written by a firm in Eastbourne rather than by the well known firm, Atkins who did Angel's flood report on the Phoenix and Pells.
