Pells pond - 2007/06/08 16:17When is LDC going to get off its backside and do something with the Pells pond.
The water level is dropping yet again, the trees on the islands and footpaths need cutting back and the wall around the pond has massive cracks in.
The council has bodged and faffed around with that pond for years....time for action now LDC....surely an English heritage/national lottery grant would be available !!!

Re:Pells pond - 2007/06/08 16:48something for the conservation officer perhaps? i am sure he would not support continuing deterioration of part of the historic Conservation Area. Perhaps he could be asked what he is prepared to do to ensure that hs colleagues maintain it properly.

Re:Pells pond - 2007/06/10 22:00Conservation Officer officially retires next week (although I suspect the post-holder retired from their duties some years ago!).

Re:Pells pond - 2007/06/11 09:08The Pells Lake is now the responsibility of Lewes Town Council not the District, though being in the Conservation Area, the Conservation Officer would have some responsibility for what goes on there. I believe there is a plan to look for Heritage Lottery Funding for the whole Pells recreation area: lake, pool and park; but that seems to have stalled.
If you want to pursue this, chase the Town Council through the Town Clerk. There are three Greens elected for that Ward, so maybe one of them could take it on as a task.

Re:Pells pond - 2007/06/11 16:15Thanks John...i might well do that.
I enjoy fishing in the Pells with my 8 year old daughter and i have been fishing there for the past 35 years....man and boy !!!
I appreciate that the combination of carp, ducks and yobs prevents the pond from being planted up with lillies and oxygenators but surely they can get their heads together to sort something out....even if it's just to cut back the trees overhanging the paths (the big willow on the island and there's a beech or hornbeam which is very low growing).
I walked through the Pells on saturday and there was a dead duck floating on the water, traffic cones and shopping trollies in the pond and rats all over the islands....happily playing in full view of everyone.
There's also a notable lack of baby ducks this year....i only counted 9 ducklings and a few baby morehens.
The place needs some TLC
