Re:CCTV camera - 2006/06/27 05:02Poor bruised and Battered. I am sorry that you think comments about hideously ugly CCTV cameras on listed buildings are negative. |Aren't the CCTV cameras you support normally associated with the fascist states that you seem to be so fearful of. Local people are finally challenging some clearly ridiculous planning horrors, which are blighting what is supposed a protected Conservation Area I don't see the person who listed this saying there shouldn't be cameras.

Battered and Bruised
Re:CCTV camera - 2006/06/29 13:35Sadly, your sarcastic and cruel comments have confirmed my fears. There appears to be an self-confessed intolerant faction here in Lewes which places "Conservation" above human life, and which like you is prepared to ridicule someone like me who has suffered at the hands of less-fortunate and resentful people. I wonder what your attitude would be if you had had the same experience as me. Would you be so unkind then, or would you start shrieking about revenge? Or do you think victims of crime and violence deserve what they get? What do you suggest?

Re:CCTV camera - 2006/06/29 15:07Battered and Bruised – I’m sorry you were a victim of crime in Lewes, but it really doesn’t bear on the issue of CCTV cameras on listed buildings. Thanks to modern technology, if a camera is required to monitor a troublespot then it is perfectly possible to install a discreet unit to cover that area.
Overly prominent CCTV cameras, along with other highly visible security measures such as metal roller shutters, barred windows or security fencing have the effect of increasing fear of crime out of proportion with the risk of it. One could argue (and I do!) that this effect is more harmful to the population in general than the negligible amount of crime these measures prevent.
So, while I’m not going to go further into the benefits, or otherwise, of CCTV (there are other forums for that), I maintain that listed buildings are not the place for them. Objecting to extraneous plant and other equipment on listed buildings is not about ‘maintaining the status quo’ – it is safeguarding those things which make our environment pleasant.

Re:CCTV camera - 2006/06/30 22:02Thank you for that, all of you, you are clearly a group of really nice, caring and considerate people with the community's well-being at heart. And I trust you will receive the same level of goodwill and concern if you ever find yourselves in a similar situation.

Re:CCTV camera - 2006/07/07 20:24You lot need something to moan about. The camera got consent after considerable negotiation in 1998 and was erected immediately, before bonfire night. The alternative was a free standing pole mounted version....would that be better? It is obvious that hardly anyone noticed the thing until maintainance, this year. And yes its still the same type of camera and the same bracket, which needed to have an offsett to be able to view High Court and other desirable targets.
