Re:Council refuse to sell land - 2007/04/28 18:16 The key word is 'intend' The Council has clearly says it does not intend to sell, and it can already see Mr Style's plans. Why have te Council been organising meetings at our expense with Mr Style, when it is his folly to try and get permission for a development on land he dosesn't own. He should be organising and paying for these meetings, and inviting our officers to his office. Unless of course the Council DO intend to sell the land, and have been working with Mt Style to this end. This is all looking increasingly grubby, and I do not like it. I would guess that the Council may have got cold feet, having finally listened to Lewesians warnings about the Jam Factory, and the copmplete and utter mess they made of the lewes House site. Is it true what is being said about Mr Style's history of working with planning Officers? I think this matter should be clarified.

Re:Council refuse to sell land - 2007/04/28 20:53 I think this says it all really...

Quote by Piers Gough Wednesday November 24, 2004 The Guardian ...

"Then, the very next day, you have to meet some third-rate planning officer in some ghastly borough where they tell you all this slimy rubbish. I can't conceive that we are on the same planet. It's just a question of what councillors will put up with. It's very exhausting."

I think that's what they all think of us. We're just rubbish, getting in the way of their making their billions. Let's tell them all to get lost.

Piers Gough - 2007/04/28 22:30 The best description of Piers Gough that I have come across is 'bling architect' - in other words preoccupied mainly with superficial effect. People choose their minions according to their personal preferences. Style is a 'bling developer' preoccupied mainly with the buzz (for him) of making money. I would have thought he had got the message by now that we don't want him here, but like all insensitive people he is too thick-skinned to get it.

Re:Council refuse to sell land - 2007/04/29 12:14 Okay, I've had an idea as to what to do. LET'S HAVE A DEMONSTRATION. Come on Lewes Matters, call a demonstration of concerned townspeople in the town centre. What's it about? Simple, it's against both Angel Property and Lewes District Council for creating/allowing a situation to develop where we've been kept in the dark about what might really happen to the industrial estate, who owns the land, what's going to happen next etc. IT COULD EVEN BE AN UPRISING!! Like I said a few posts ago, either this has been deliberate or we've been considered too stupid to understand - either way AN INSULT. If all else fails, let's do Lewes Arms on them. So come on Lewes Matters, you've sat on the fence for too long. Let's get going!!!!

Re:Council refuse to sell land - 2007/04/29 20:56 I understand why Andy wants a demonstration now and completely agree with his views about the way Angel (whose sole interest is the money to be made) and (worse, as they are supposed to represent our interests) Lewes DC have handled matters. Having to draw out information like teeth is very suspicious and, as Sashka said, what has emerged feels a bit grubby.

But I think it would be best to see what Angel's planning application looks like (if there ever is one) so we are sure of what precisely we're facing. What we've had so far is - as Mr Style's comments on this site show - pure fantasy. In the meantime, there are two independent candidates standing in the May elections who would make sure Lewes DC ask the right questions about any proposals for Phoenix - John Stockdale and Rob Shepherd.

Incidentally, I wouldn't criticise Lewes Matters for sitting on the fence; their role has always been to supply background information on the proposed development, not to take a stand one way or the other - without Lewes Matters and this website most of what we now know would never have come to light.

Re:Council refuse to sell land - 2007/04/29 21:20 I agree with Andy that a demonsration should not be ruled out, as it was very effective when an attempt was made to redevelop the Railway land with in an almost identical way. One of the reasons for refusal was the traffic issue, and that was years ago. I fail to see how on earth Lewes District Council could have considered there to have been an improvement since then.

I think Lewes Matters have been admirable in being completely open minded about any propsals for the land, and have enabled us to express all our views, including Angel, myself and everyone inbetween. I used to be quite open to the thought of Angel developing the land,as it is a very attractive idea indeed.... and then the rot set in...

For those of us at the anti-Angel proposals end of the spectrum, like Andy, I think we should turn to Phoenix Action who also have a web site and are pro-active. They have already had one demonstration, of the ludicrous flood wall scheme for the Pells, using card to demonstrate what the proposed massive flood wall would look like (think Berlin wall)

I recieved an election leaflet today from the Liberal Democrats. It says "the Lib Dems will not give way to unacceptable development plans for our towns and district" and then boasts that they "refused to sell off North St land to a developer" I think the message is clear, and conradicts Mr Style's claim that he did not offer to buy it . You cannot refuse to sell something, if no one has given you an opportunity to refuse their offer.

NB; this is not a suggestion that anyone should necessarily support the Lib Dems. Vote for who you like.
