Re:Garages in New Road - 2006/08/01 21:03
Over 200 local objections stopped planning permission for LW/04/2637 in 2004. It was got through on minor amendments last year. Plans would put a high (higher than telegraph pole) and large scale building between Pipe Passage and Castle Lane. Beautiful views of the Castle will be lost. Residents have discovered that Sussex Archaeological Society (SAS) owns part of the land – it is part of the Eleventh Century mound. Part of this SAS land was disputed by the new owners of the rest of the site. SAS have done or are about to do a deal over this portion. It is hard to get a clear answer about this deal and I and others are still waiting for replies to letters….but money is involved. The developer now wants to buy another 2 or 3 metre wide strip alongside Castle Lane, currently untouched ancient land. Part of the Planning Consent involved developers paying for an independent Archaeological Survey – results due in about a week from the County Archaeologist (ring East Sussex County Council). This was a half-day and only involved a very small area. When the Old Forge garages were demolished a few weeks ago, bulldozers ripped out ancient arches set into the mound behind, and put them on a rubbish skip. No photos : no recording. Yet SAS’s brief is “to promote Archaeology in Sussex”!! The building, if it goes ahead, will mean the loss of a beautiful and historic part of the town as well as losing a rich archaeological site. SAS argue that Planning Permission was already obtained – but, you can get Planning Consent for land you do not own…. To actually build you have to own it… To contact SAS – Phone John Manley 01273-486260 Write John Manley, Bull House, High St., Lewes, BN7 1XH Email ceo@sussexpast.co.uk
