Garages in New Road - 2006/07/26 20:15 A builder has demolished three garages backing on to the Castle Mound in New Road. The builder was seen carting away stonework from the Mound. Sussex Archaeological Society were informed, but seem rather relaxed about it.

There has been an argument over this development for some time. The house will block views of the Castle from the Paddock. 200 people objected to the planning application which was turned down. When it was resubmitted, protestors were told it wouldn’t go ahead because Sussex Archaeological Society owned some of the land. But, it now appears they may have reached a financial settlement with the developer. The Society are also said to have agreed to sell a strip of land alongside the development underneath the eave.

At least one trustee seems to be unaware of the details of the transaction. Maybe others are too. Is it too late to stop it? At least, the builder should be prevented from further excavating into William de Warenne’s Mound.

Re:Garages in New Road - 2006/07/29 00:39 Take a look at the planning application, and also ring up Endlish Heritage urgently, as I believe the Mound is a scheduled Ancient Monument but There should be a watching brief for this work at the very list, especially if they are carting away stonework. Is the SAS a charity? If so look at their claimed objectives and see if enabling this work contradicts them, and ask why the turtess have possibly breached their own policy. The planning information will all be in a file you need to ask at the desk for. Don't just look a
t the plans. This will contain loads of information about what happened at approval stage. Ask here if you need more information.

Re:Garages in New Road - 2006/08/01 21:03 Over 200 local objections stopped planning permission for LW/04/2637 in 2004. It was got through on minor amendments last year.
Plans would put a high (higher than telegraph pole) and large scale building between Pipe Passage and Castle Lane. Beautiful views of the Castle will be lost. Residents have discovered that Sussex Archaeological Society (SAS) owns part of the land – it is part of the Eleventh Century mound. Part of this SAS land was disputed by the new owners of the rest of the site. SAS have done or are about to do a deal over this portion. It is hard to get a clear answer about this deal and I and others are still waiting for replies to letters….but money is involved. The developer now wants to buy another 2 or 3 metre wide strip alongside Castle Lane, currently untouched ancient land.
Part of the Planning Consent involved developers paying for an independent Archaeological Survey – results due in about a week from the County Archaeologist (ring East Sussex County Council). This was a half-day and only involved a very small area. When the Old Forge garages were demolished a few weeks ago, bulldozers ripped out ancient arches set into the mound behind, and put them on a rubbish skip. No photos : no recording. Yet SAS’s brief is “to promote Archaeology in Sussex”!!
The building, if it goes ahead, will mean the loss of a beautiful and historic part of the town as well as losing a rich archaeological site.
SAS argue that Planning Permission was already obtained – but, you can get Planning Consent for land you do not own…. To actually build you have to own it…

Re:Garages in New Road - 2006/08/04 16:30 I see Lewes Matters has put a link to the Sussex Archaeological Society in its Links section. Nice to see the SAS has its priorities clear - seems to be all about how to get married in one of their buildings. For what it's worth, I've emailed them and asked them to explain their involvement in the New Road site. Wonder if they'll bother to reply?
