letter in sussex express - 2006/03/25 02:08
In response to John Stockdale's response to my letter, I would like to make it clear that I had not researched his circumstances as suggested . The remark about him looking to downsize was really only a flippant observation of the possible needs of a group of people in Lewes. At the exhibition we were approached on many occasions by residents of Lewes who were looking to downsize and could not find suitable accomodation. I appologise if Mr Stockdale thought I was actually referring to his actual circumstances or had researched them, I honestly had no idea, but was merely making an observation about this type of housing need in Lewes. The relevance is that the provision of the type of unit that will appeal to people looking to downsize is that it frees up larger family housing for new families. It should also be noted that we are not basing our whole strategy for regenerating the Phoenix Quarter on this type of housing need, but that we consider there is a wide range of housing needed in Lewes District including, family housing, flats for single people and couples, sheltered housing, assisted living housing and affordable housing. We intend to determine the housing mix in the scheme by reference to Lewes District Council's housing needs survey and by reference to the viability and land use issues that will determine the appropriate mix.
