Re:Lewes Cinema - 2007/04/14 13:18I understand Mr Style does not own the land where the proposed cinema would go. Can Mr Style confirm the position, please? I also think it might be best to take a view of the development as a whole rather than pick on one aspect you might (or might not) like and ignore the rest.

Re:Lewes Cinema - 2007/04/14 14:41I agree that we should view the development as a whole and amenities such as a cinema should not be the determining factor.
Conversely though it would be reasonable not to oppose an application, because of one or two potential problems. Especially if there is an opportunity for them to be rectified. That is why I decided to post on this site, because I just wanted to air my thoughts.
Hopefully Mr Style will be able to answer some of the issues that has been raised, including if they have a strong commitment towards a new cinema. People may think it is the naivaty of youth, but I think it will be more usefull to ask the developers what we want, instead of dismissing it out of hand. Otherwise with the housing shortage I believe central government will take the decision away from local people and we will have no choice.

Re:Lewes Cinema - 2007/04/14 15:07Sorry just thought of another point after reading through the thread again.
Don't think climbing frames are bad, although not sure about ping pong as do people play that. However this could be somthing that could be included at the pells. I know that your main concern will be the phoenix site itself, however enhancing some of the facilities at the pells would be nice. Or even maybe there is enough space for a small minature golf course. Therefore people can hire the equipment from the kiosk.
Lastly I think you have dropped this part, but I really liked the small amphitheatre. Even if it is just a central feature in the development where people can relax and sit down in the sun and have a picnic with their family (or for office workers do have lunch, instead of a cafe). Also it could have the potential as an area where local organisations could hold plays in the summer.

Re:Lewes Cinema - 2007/04/14 15:13Ok, So answer me this Mr Styles, if you can...
What are you your real motives for trying to push this development through, huh? Isn't it just you trying to make a fast buck, or are you a genuine do-gooder? And pleeeease.. don't give me some meely-mouthed sit-on-the-fence response - tell me the truth.
And you old wrinklys...
Aren't you just being all nimbish or whatever you call it? You just seem to want house prices to go up in your pretty-pretty antiques-road-show fairy castles. Stuck in the nineteenth century. WHAT ABOUT US? You created us, now you seem to want to leave us all stuck with houses costing a million pounds while you go on world tours. We want a decent place to live and work, with things to do, places to go, houses and flats that we can afford. Stuff car-free zones and allotments. You can afford that maybe. WE need a decent modern place with a future.

Re:Lewes Cinema - 2007/04/14 19:44Hmmm, looking at some of the links I think people have really taken against this development big time. Not sure why? I read the express and can understand concerns over 9 storey buildings (which have been removed I think) and also the importance over flood defences.
Andy I understand your anger, it's annoying that we are being priced out of our own town and no one really cares to much about our view. I read Viva Lewes as well and everyone says they shop at Bills or Waitrose, but never at Tescos (which I thought the majority of people do).
I can't afford to shop for clothes in Lewes so I go elsewhere. I'm not against the independents in the town my parents use them and they are a good for tourists. However we need the balance I can accept not having an extended Tescos, because they can have a detrimental affect on the municipals (Dixons,Argos etc)as they undercut their rivals. It seems though that some people don't want to compromise and have anything new anything but the current Independents. You can correct me if i'm wrong.
I hope Mr Style and the developers take the view that there are a variety of views on the phoenix development and not just the views of a few people who have formed a group, and when they are finalising their plans they to account the people who have offered constructive points. Realistically any developer wants to make a profit on their development, if they didn't think they would make money they wouldn't propose anything. However I don't think that should mean that we can't also gain from the development. Logically it's in their interest to get local people on side to make it work and find out what they really want.
Lastly I am interested about the ampitheatre and recreational pursuits. Can we make suggestions? It's actually good to hear that there is no final cinema design would we as a public be allowed to see potential plans and be able to comment on them before submission?

Re:Lewes Cinema - 2007/04/15 00:42Mark, we need constructive criticism and ideas rather than negativity. This can be great for lewes and for young people. Yes we need to make a profit but. We also need to make a great place which people want to live in work in and visit. The amphitheatre was removed for artists houses but. We think there should be outdoor events in the riverfront. Square. The cinema is on land owned by the council.but will form part of the development proposal. We also want to upgrade the pells pool as part of the development
