Re:Lewes Cinema - 2007/04/15 09:29Charles, this thread is becoming surreal. I can only assume you haven't read the statement on the home page that the Council have decided not to sell you any land including (I think) the land on which you propose to build the cinema. If this is true, continuing the debate about the cinema is a bit like rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic.
I will start a new thread and invite you to comment there on your reactions and intentions on this important news.

Re:Lewes Cinema - 2007/04/15 10:43What is surreal is the attitude of those who decide to use this kid of twisted logic to forward their view that progress is not possible. The land that lewes own can still be developed if flood protection is put in place by regeneration. we are not relying on being the developer of land owned by Lewes. Sorry, but we will proceed

Re:Lewes Cinema - 2007/04/15 12:06Thanks for the reply. Pity about the ampitheatre, but some communal area would be good. Whether it is Gardens,Square etc. I don't know if people take the view seriously, I don't think it is difficult to understand why some people would like a cinema, recreation facilities and even affordable houses.
I don't mean to irratate people (and I think the majority of people on this site is sceptical) so I probably won't post again. Although i think I would like to make one point Lewes has lots of groups, which are beneficial to the community. With out them we would not have a new Library, the possible return of Harveys, flood lit athletics track at the local comprensive (not to many state schools have that)and the Pells pool still open. My attitude to this development is that we should be asking/telling the developer, what we like for the community (for instance cinema). If they can't provide then oppose, but I don't think we should be against development full stop.
So far the only suggestion seems to be a car free development (OK, in principle I don't drive myself). However public transport is poor in Sussex, you can't even get a train to Uckfield. So the notion that the only suggestion so far has been for people in the development not to have a car, when the majority of people in the town drive is a worry (as it seems hypocritical (sorry)). People may ignore my comments, but I just want to hear some positive suggestions (that can improve the town for the whole community). At the moment it seems really personal, between a number of people and there is little need for that. You all come from Lewes, so why don't you just presuppose that you all want whats best for the town(although have differing views about what that maybe). If that is naive, simplistic or impossible than thats a shame.

Re:Lewes Cinema - 2007/04/15 13:10Mark, thank you for your detailed and very thoughtful responses, I agree that replying to people on this website forum can all get a bit personal and bitter and this is to be regretted. My view is as you have said that community groups who work to get new facilities into the town are to be commended and I hope that community groups and local people will contine to have constructive input into the development proposals for the Phoenix area.By the way in the last post I mistakenly wrote kid I meant kind,

Re:Lewes Cinema - 2007/04/15 21:24It's strange that Mr Style doesn't see it as odd to make promises about what he will build on land he doesn't own. He takes the reverse position over the Jam Factory fiasco (see this site). The residents there want an amenity area that they were promised but wasn't forthcoming. They've therefore put in a planning proposal on land that Angel Property own. Mr Style's response? 'I am... aware that they have gone to the extent of applying for planning consent for this and being granted it by Southwark Council despite the fact that the land is not in their ownership. Although they are entitled to their views and legally entitled to make such a planning application, I would suggest that this is a totally unrealistic objective. (Angel to Jam Factory Residents January 2006). A case of don't do what I do, but do what I say, I think.

Re:Lewes Cinema - 2007/04/19 21:27The yoghourt knitters have rather tended to dominate the airspace in this whole issue so far, and if you were to get all your information from Viva Lewes or some of the threads on Lewes Matters you would think that all any body cares about in this town is car free wind powered sweat lodges (and that no body in Lewes buys anything in Tescos and only very occasionally treats themselves to something organing in Waitrose) What I find striking in this thread is the developers lack of awareness that in addressing Mark's questions about the amphitheatre he directly undermines his earlier patronising position about how important the "yoof" are - why did he replace amenities with housing for yet more artists? When will he learn that if you try to please every one you will fail miserably - better to be courageous and honest and admit when you are just plain wrong as indeed he is. He is not offering progress unless you hold a very limited view of what that might be. The key issues as far as many of us can see are the increased flood risks to some of the most affordable housing in Lewes, which is already out of reach for many people, young and "wrinkly" alike, the additional pressure on schools, health provision and other amenities and the total lack of commitment to providing housing which will enable young Lewesians to remain in their own town. For that reason there is a huge amount of thought going into the idea of a community land trust and if Andy or anyone else wants to check out the phoenix action website (linked from this site) you could become involved in that process of consultation.
