Lewes Cinema - 2007/04/13 21:32 Hi, I've been taking a look at the plans listed and as a younger member of the community there are many aspects of the development I like.

I am hopeful if someone involved is able to explain a couple of issues. Firstly I think a cinema would be a great benefit to the community, I am wondering if the people involved can offer a guarentee that this could be met? In another thread they have spoken about a specific company 'the screens', which could come on board, is this still the case (I think there cinemas would be suited to Lewes).

Another point in your website you have photographs of a cinema with a distinct, traditional look. However in the pictures it looks like a typical modern cinema (not in itself bad), has the design for the cinema been finalised and is their scope for the building to be made more distinctive.

I don't mean to be impertinant, but i think for a lot of people the promise of amenites such as this look promising.

Re:Lewes Cinema - 2007/04/13 23:02 Yeah, I agree. It's about time someone under the age of about 55 had a voice/had their opinion asked. All this discussion so far has been by and on behalf of the wrinkly generation. What about us? We'd like Lewes to join the the 20th century let alone the 21st century.

Re:Lewes Cinema - 2007/04/14 00:55 It is great to hear the opinions of some young people, we really hope for the facilities we are planning to provide to bring new vitality to the town, with new homes new jobs and places to go, Another idea we are consideing is to have a climbing wall and outdoor ping pong tables..and yes the screen cinema people still wish
to be involved .the design of the cinema isn't finished yet we welcome your ideas.please see www.thephoenixquarter.co.UK

Re:Lewes Cinema - 2007/04/14 01:47 So why hasn't anyone asked our opinion? huh? NO-ONE, repeat NO-ONE has. They/you are all too busy trying to make your fortunes/protect your little castles. Your all as bad as each other - GREEDY, GREEDY, GREEDY. How are we supposed to buy a home when a small flat in Lewes or Brighton costs £200,000? Explain that to me if you can. Is this scheme of yours going to make anything really better for us young people? I don't think so. It just might make it not quite so bad. That's why I'm interested. Don't want any patronising crap about climbing frames, thanks very much.

Re:Lewes Cinema - 2007/04/14 09:00 Andy, I agree affordable housing is hugely important and if a climbing wall sounds patronising I aplogise, nonetheless it is good to hear what young people want from this development.

Re:Lewes Cinema - 2007/04/14 13:04 I think that is a tad harsh, he has tried to give an expedient answer and I am grateful. if you look at the other threads, he has tried to answer questions before and mostly got a lot of flak trying. I think their is responsibility amongst us to use this forum to air are views.

I agree with your annoyance over house prices it's easier for my mates who went to Uni in London to get a place, cos at least there is a choice. I think it is sad that people who have grown up in the town, went to school, go to Bonfire find it difficult to afford a place. Great aspect about Lewes is the originality of the people and it would be detrimental to the town if that is lost if all the young people leave.

As for the amenities I really like the idea of the cinema, aestheitics are subjective but I don't mind some of the old curzons (such as in Eastbourne)with the wood bannisters and traditional stearway. I suppose economics are what matters. If I had my way I think threes screens would be fine, two larger ones at the top and a smaller screen at the ground floor specialising for young children, where the reception and confectionary counter would go. Also if you know the Curzon at Shaftsbury avenue (which a good small cinema), a small bar where people could be served drinks, coffee etc while they read the newspapers/magazine before or after film (this room/level could be secluded from the rest of the cinema. Perhaps this is a pipe dream, but that is what I would really like from the cinema.

I've got other comments to make, which I might put in a different thread. It mainly concerns the lack of mens clothing shops in the town. I mainly go to Brighton to do my shopping, because it is more affordable. I don't mind too much because I like going to Brighton, however for young families on a budget I believe it can be difficult (it was when I was younger). I know it is probably impossible to state what municipals could come to the town, but thewse stores could be a real asset Primark, BHS, Topman,Topshop, Burton and Dorothy Perkins.

Lastly about recreation, why don't you as a developer make some form gesture/donation to the Pells pool which is a community facility that is heavily reliant on the community to run. I doubt it would be that expensive, but improving some of the facilites like changing rooms, lockers, maybe putting some playground rides in that land would be appreciated
