Piers Gough, diplomat - 2006/04/21 14:59 Something different for a change. I've looked up Piers Gough and the following links make interesting reading/viewing, plus a couple of quotes of his from the Guradian. Seems like a sensitive diplomatic guy, with a penchant for architecture that fits in with existing, ideal for liaising with the likes of us here in Lewes.

Piers Gough Wednesday November 24, 2004 The Guardian ...

"Opposition to architecture is the last available place to be active locally. Local politics has been been so deracinated that there's little else to do."

"At the academy, there are proper architectural discussions. Then, the very next day, you have to meet some third-rate planning officer in some ghastly borough where they tell you all this slimy rubbish. I can't conceive that we are on the same planet. It's just a question of what councillors will put up with. It's very exhausting."

and in The Times June 3rd 2005...

“To build new ‘old’ is the most spiritually destructive thing we can do”. Gough’s idea of good architecture is typified by the controversial and futuristic plans for Hove’s seafront by Frank Gehry, which he is helping to bring to fruition.

I for one am very much looking forward to seeing this model everyone keeps talking about but which never appears.

Re:Piers Gough, diplomat - 2006/04/21 17:48 Thankyou for that, most amusing. Piers Gough as well as being an excellent architect is very funny and not afraid to speak his mind. I am afraid you will not get Poundbery on Ouse from Piers, but you will get very well considered exciting modern architecture and a lively debate.

Re:Piers Gough, diplomat - 2006/04/21 21:48 Fine, but where and when is the debate?

Re:Piers Gough, diplomat - 2006/04/22 03:09 why is it that every time a resident criticises an architect, or developer it is assumed that they like Prince Charles' embarrassing Barrat Home Village. In case our friends at Angel Property don't realise Lewes nowadays is full of trendy design types, including architects, and even planning experts, who appreciate design so much , they wish to live in a classic historic example. This is why they are very keen to ensure that a ridiculoulsy oversized development doesn't ruin it, however exciting the 'yet to be seen' designs might be.
