Re:Conservation Area Advisory Committee - 2006/05/08 19:02 The CAAC sounds like a good idea, as long as it didn't just become another 'talking shop' with no teeth, useful to the powers that be, so they can say they've consulted and then just go their merry way.

Re:Conservation Area Advisory Committee - 2006/05/09 13:35 Miranda - Conservation Area Advisory Committees don't have teeth. But they can deliver a mighty strong suck.

Their role is to advise with no executive power. But because of the strength of membership - crammed, hopefully, with professionals in many relevant disciplines - their opinion is listened to. By Council Planning Departments,

by Councillors sitting on Planning Committees, and by smart developers who want to save time and money by getting things right at the planning stage. My most daunting task will be to persuade LDC that it is not unique - that it will gain immeasurably from the presence of a CAAC for Lewes - just like so many other, similar Councils. I had hoped to see some comment from a Council Planner on the forum, even if it was negative. I will, of course, be contacting the Council Planning Dept in due course, but need to conduct further research first. However, by going public at this stage, I hope that when we do meet, I will be preaching to the converted. A foolish hope, perhaps....

Re:Conservation Area Advisory Committee - 2006/05/09 14:18 I'm assuming that a CAAC would be for the benefit of committee on the larger schemes, rather than every satellite dish or boundary wall alteration in the town? If so, and provided that the idea is welcomed by conservation professionals at LDC I would be in favour, and happy to assist.

Re:Conservation Area Advisory Committee - 2006/05/10 13:46 Anthony, wouldn't CABE (which I've just learnt about courtesy of the Lewes Matters site) fulfill a good part of what you're suggesting? Not that I'm against what you're proposing at all, but has anyone to your knowledge approached CABE and asked for help/advice?
Cheers, Chris

Re:Conservation Area Advisory Committee - 2006/05/10 14:38 CABE is national version of our local Architects Advisory Panel. Both have caused controversy because of the conflicts of interest of members and the applications they were commenting on. Our own local panel consists of a small pool of local architects regularly commenting on schemes being proposed by developers that employ them. They also present their own schemes to fellow architects. My personal view is that this is completely unacceptable.

A CAAC would consider Conservation issues, although this would encompass a view on Architectural merit. Potential conflicts of interest could be addressed when such a group was set up.

Re:Conservation Area Advisory Committee - 2006/05/12 15:51 Chris, Mr Oliver's perceptive comment posted after yours, says it all. The Lewes CABE cannot criticise most proposed local development without upsetting its own bedfellows. And so it doesn't. And so we end up with architectural masterpieces like the St John's St. development. At least those ghastly railings can go. Can't they?
