GO AWAY MR STYLE - 2007/06/06 13:13 I am basically in favour of developing the North Street area, because it is pretty awful as it is today, and in my opinion we desperately need new life injected into Lewes, to provide entertainment, work and homes for our young people and create a future for them here.

HOWEVER, we simply cannot entrust this endeavour to a developer who has not behaved openly towards us and who continues to be in dispute with both the Planning Authorities and Residents of his flagship project i.e. the Jam Factory in Southwark. That would be nonsensical - we would be doomed to years of chaos and dispute.

Let's look at what he says (from The Independent in 2001)...
"The Hartley (Jam Factory) project got delayed by what I felt was verging on incompetence, but it ended up making money because the value of the site went up. I like to have a joke about that: Spencer's (Charles Style's brother) incompetence has made us lots of money, which is a bit cruel, but there's some truth in it. When we disagree I get the veto. Angel Property is built mainly with my capital, but Spencer has a profit-share on the jam factory and a salary, and he gets a stake on any project he instigates. When we did the deal, he had no capital to risk, and when he said, "we're going to get very rich", I had to say, "it's me who's going to get very rich, but you'll get quite rich". Spencer will do very well out of it, and he's earned it. But if you're not risking as much, you can't expect as much reward."

We will NEVER trust Mr Style and his company Angel Property. Nothing he and his arrogant architect Piers Gough have done has made us feel anything other than anger and mistrust towards them. And in my opinion nothing they can do now will change that feeling.

So, GO AWAY MR STYLE, change your name, change your company name and go try make your fortune elsewhere, where they don't know so much about you.

Re:GO AWAY MR STYLE - 2007/06/06 15:30 A lot of people will agree with Derek. Mr Style must be regretting that he ever mentioned the Jam Factory as Angel's flagship development. And that interview in the Independent all those years ago has come back to bite him, hasn't it? I am sure Lewes District councillors will be bearing all this in mind if an application ever goes in.

Re:GO AWAY MR STYLE - 2007/06/18 15:11 Sadly Derek, I spoke just recently with our new Lead Councillor for Planning (Peter Gardiner)and he clarified that the Council cannot take into account the ethics, track-record or general suitability of a developer when an application is being considered - it's purely down to what's being proposed in the application. The only control the Council has over a developer is through the Section 106 mechanisim, which is a contract between the developer and the Council.

This seems a little crazy in the context of a development which could leave the town centre in a complete mess, but I guess that's the way it is.

Re:GO AWAY MR STYLE - 2007/06/19 14:54 Better Charles Style and Angel Property than Barratt or Wimpey. Be careful what you wish for

Re:GO AWAY MR STYLE - 2007/06/19 15:02 You may be right from a style point of view, I don't know, but do you think those guys would leave the Jam Factory sort of mess unresolved for years? Or publicly make some of the comments Charles Style has made? They would possibly be more determined to maintain a squeaky-clean reputation. If push comes to shove, a little outfit can just go into liquidation and/or walk away from a difficult situation.

Re:GO AWAY MR STYLE - 2007/06/20 00:12 Renee, I hate to break it to you but Charles Style is going to get Wimpy or Barret to do this development! He has been in discussion with them to get his profit,as early as possible, and has publicly stated that he will not be dveloping most of the site!
