slums? - 2007/05/02 01:40 i would like to know when the criteria set out on the home page fits the developer's plans -why is there so much moaning and groaning? there is an incrediable amount of scathing negitivity on this site... what an appalling bore. -why cant we work together in a constructive manner? it is obvious something thats viable needs to be done with the phoenix site and there seems to be so little said here for the benefits of whats proposed. personally, i cant wait for this eyesore of an area to be cleaned up, and i.e. a river front walk made in the place of a derelict space...
i know many people that are positive about the plans proposed, and would like to encourage the developer as the plans seem an exciting prospect: particularly important for young people, for those in need of affordable housing, and generally, for those who want to see this beautiful town with more resourses, as well as with more integrated and coherent structure.
i would like the moaners to note that lewes has for sometime now become well known for its unfortunate moanies, it is not a great thing for us to be famous for.
as the developer seems to have answered questions clearly and thoroughly in the discussion forum, those responding could at least bother to read the detailed replys, so that they dont repeat questions as it makes us seem at best, sloppy.
lastly, i would like john stockdale, the most notorious of the moanies to note, that in reguard to his flyer advertising as an independent councillor, i suggest he visits some real slums, where millions of people in this world live in real poverty... before he refers to lewes, a middle class and privileged english town becoming one. he comes across yet again as ignorant and pathetic, not only, as many here are, in his miscomprehension of the land planning process.

Re:slums? - 2007/05/02 09:24 There is an increasing amount of negativity about these plans because in planning terms there is much to be negative about. If you read about the Jam Factory, it will give you an idea of the impending disaster that many of those negative people you are criticising are trying to avoid. I am sure many people would like to see this site developed into a nice new area, but are these people really aware of the planning issues?

Re:slums? - 2007/05/02 10:39 Jessi should understand that it isn't 'negative' to be concerned about the extent of the development Angel proposes and about the developer's ability to actually deliver what he promises. Nor is it 'positive' to accept Angel's proposals uncritically. We live here and, if the development went ahead, would have to live with the consequences for the rest of our lives.

Re:slums? - 2007/05/02 11:14 Originally I was quite enthusiastic about develoment of this site. Then, when I looked at the planning issues, and other developments by this developer, I had the creeping realistaion that my town could be completely ruined, by a developer, who was going to sell on his planning prmission, walk away with the profits, and leave us to it. I do not want to be sitting in my house looking at empty buildings, that do not contain any affordable housing, that are built on a flood plain, and are being increasingly vandalised because of a legal dispute, which was contributed to by a developer who submitted plans that don't apparently match the outline planning permission. Mr Style is refusing to take any responsibility for his unapproved changes of plan, instead blaming Planning officers, and his own customers, who you will appreciate wer originally so positive about plans that they invested in his development. People have tried to engage with Angel, but this is very difficult when they only answer questions that suit them.

I remember a particularly bizarre thread on this site in which Mr Style tried, unsuccessfully, to argue that an 8 story building only had 4 storeys- but with a 'tower' of four flats on top that didn't count as an extra 4 storeys as there was only flat in each level. I wouldn't care, but not only do I think it is misleading, and question why anyone would get involved in such a convoluted description, but it is exactly like one of the issues that has become a bone of contention at the Jam factory. This is only my opinion, but unlike Mt Style I have been associated with Lewes all my life, and will be here long after he is gone. I am not negative about new developments, as there can be some really good ones. This whole saga rings alarm bells to me.
