Re:Car Free Development - 2006/10/06 02:10 Having heard the government's Chief Scientific Advisor Sir David King on the radio today saying that climate change is the greatest threat the world has ever known, I am horrified that we are even discussing this disastrous development. The non-renewable resources needed to build and then fuel the buildings, the increased risk of flooding, the increase of traffic and the conspicuous consumption encouraged by non-essential shops and cafes ... I feel sick.

What would be great would be for

a. Charles Style to wake up to the real need of Lewes for low-density affordable sustainable car-free housing. Or

b., For Charles Style to realise that he already has enough money to live on and let us Lewes people get on with the serious community-building we need to do in order to survive. Maybe just let the Phoenix reverts to the flood plain it once was.

I've today given up our car, a minibus I've given to a charity via Freeserve. I've helped set up a car share with a group of friends. I rarely drive. We each need to be doing some serious soul searching to get to One Planet living.

Charles Style, if you care for Lewes as you say you do, please listen to what all the media and government are now saying, listen to your heart and to your grandchildren and put the planet, if not Lewes, first.

Re:Car Free Development - 2006/10/06 13:41 Adrienne is quite right. It is one minute to midnight, social niceties are still being observed and the orchestra is playing as the Titanic goes down. Congratulations on making a significant personal gesture towards a solution.

Does it really make any sense to build on a flood plain with the increased rainfall expected from global warming? Perhaps, it makes even less sense to build on an estuarial flood plain when you add in sea level rises, now forecast at up to 4 metres in the next 100 years by one scientist.

Dear site visitor at IP address 38.103.63.60. We were forced to make it necessary for you to register and login before making forum postings because of the constant flood of unwanted and often abusive material that was being uploaded by anonymous spammers from all over the world. I'm sure you know the sort of stuff - viagra ads and the like - what a bore! But you can of course read the postings without logging in, and in any case it only takes a couple of minutes to register - you're not losing your privacy, but you're keeping out the spammers. So do please register and continue using the forum - we need your input! Thanks, Lewes Matters Admin.
