Re:Over loaded schools in prospect - 2006/07/18 14:06 OK, Chris. If you are right, and we should look at the demographics before we consider pressure on school places, we come back to one of the issues that annoyed Charles Style so much in the early days of this forum when he was threatening to sue me. He said at the public meeting in December that we needn't worry about pressure on school places because most of the housing would be one and two bedroom flats for people with no children: presumably divorcees, widows, a sprinkling of young marrieds - and second homes for Londoners etc. Charles was very angry that I characterised this as 'granny dumping'. I am not sure how this kind of accommodation benefits workers following jobs to the South East or the already aged demographic profile of Lewes.

Re:Over loaded schools in prospect - 2006/07/19 02:13 I get the distinct impression John that you would find fault with anything related to this proposal or for that matter any proposal. If it were blue you'd say we wanted red, if it were shiny you'd say we needed matt. So instead of conceding that maybe it would be worth applying a bit of logic, you twist the whole thing round and say we don't want/need this sort of accommodation? Well, maybe you're right, but have you checked? There'll be some facts and figures somewhere, for sure.

Re:Over loaded schools in prospect - 2006/07/19 15:49 Chris, you are being a little unfair I think. The schools issue is just one small facet of the impact of this major proposal that needs to be inspected and commented on in detail.

I'm not against any development on this site. Nor, according to the Lewes Matters survey are most residents. I (and they) just don't like this one. We want to see the planners (in consultation with the landowners) produce a comprehensive planning brief for the whole area including the land behind Waitrose that now belongs to Barratts. The brief would then be available for comment in the community before being adopted by the Council.

Off the top of my head, what would I like to see there? I would want to make sure all the key infrastructure issues like traffic and flood protection are properly addressed and to see a less intrusive, less dense mix of housing and light industrial with local shops that don't undermine the High Street, a riverside walk with restaurants, and parking proposals that also solve the mess caused by the present scheme which is 'not fit for purpose'.

All takes a bit of time and thinking about? Just remember this. Lewes District Council has released enough land for building to meet its housebuilding targets to 2011, so there's no pressure. Getting it right will enhance the centre of "the best town to live in in England" (Daily Telegraph, I'm told - I'm afraid I don't read it). Getting it wrong will wreck Lewes and leave us and the developer with a £150m white elephant like the Brighton Marina.

Re:Over loaded schools in prospect - 2006/07/22 20:13 I would just like to add to Chris' penultimate sentence in his last comment (but without his permission): '.... in the short term'. QED, I think Chris.

Re:Over loaded schools in prospect - 2006/07/22 20:17 Oops! I mean Chris' comment of the 17th July in reply to CM Darcy
