Re:Car Free Development - 2006/04/30 22:06 Charles, I am very glad to hear that you are in favour of car clubs. Will you be as committed to this idea as the developers at Southdown Road? They have permission to create 125 residential units, and 202 parking spaces for the residents and the workers in the new office space there. They have included a car club as the whole of their Section 106 agreement. It will have all of two cars! Very reassuring.

Re:Car Free Development - 2006/04/30 22:33 RBB, we have commissioned the reports and East Sussex will be able to consider them when we submit our planning application, not the other way round. The design of new junctions is however the responsibility of the traffic engineers and they have employed engineers to design this. We have been able to give them useful feedback on how the design integrates with our proposal and we have also been able to relay to them views recieved from local people during our consultation as to their concerns about possible "rat runs" and ways to avoid them becoming effected by the junction proposals East Sussex wish to implement. We have certainly not been wasting their time or getting them to do work for us.

Re:Car Free Development - 2006/05/01 09:04 Thanks Charles, I think that answers my question on your commitment to car clubs.

Re:Car Free Development - 2006/05/01 09:30 I think you have made your point very successfully Dea You suggest a simple, basic, uncontraversial idea, that benefits everyone, is found on most schemes of this type, looks to the future, and wouldn't stop any other car related development on this site, and what happens? you get completely ignored.

Re:Car Free Development - 2006/05/01 10:16 Elinor , how can you say i have ignored Dea's ideas on car clubs, I have said we intend to use car clubs as a means to encourage people to not use their cars. This has always been our aim and was in fact mentioned in the exhibition. I could do without the insinuation that I am ignoring her views on this and I have also stated that we would even look at the possibility of extending the car club to being able to service other residents in the area, although this is obviously not our responsibility. It might however help to get Dea and yourself to consider getting rid of your cars and then maybe we could get a little honesty and balance into the debate about car ownership, as I have stated it seems totally unfair that the people who are complaining about car ownership amongst new residents are themselves car owners and just do not think that new people should have cars. That is like saying that imigrants to this country should not have the same rights as people who live here. The constant insinuation that the developer is not interested in promoting sustainable design or the use of devices to encourage the use of other transport measures than the car is not fair and not helpful.

Re:Car Free Development - 2006/05/01 10:27 The quantity of cars in the car club will be based on the findings of our traffic assessment and by agreement with East Sussex traffic engineers and will not just be a token amount. We are committed to this idea and believe it can work. We do not however believe it will be possible for this development to work without car parking for residents or businesses who locate here, as it is not possible for all the existing residents or businesses to operate without a car.
