A Special Session of Southwark's Planning Committee at 7pm on Tuesday 5th May 2007 at Southwark Town Hall, Peckham Road. The draft recommendation from Southwark Planners to the Planning Committee is to grant consent to Angel Property's planning applications, which are contrary to what the Jam Factory Residents want. The Planning Committee, consisting of elected local councillors, will be voting whether to grant consent or issue a refusal.

Phoenix Action called a General Meeting on the evening of Monday 5th March 2007 in the Lecture Room Lewes Town Hall

Lewes VotesA capacity meeting at Lewes town hall heard that current building development plans in Lewes amount to an additional 1170 homes – the equivalent of adding another Landport to the town.

The meeting, called by Phoenix Action in association with Lewes Flood Action and Malling Residents Association, heard there were plans at various stages of development for new housing and commercial development throughout the town. By far the largest is in the North Street area: the “Phoenix Quarter” proposed by London property developer Angel Property. Lewes District Council is currently conducting a ‘Vision’ consultation with 'key stakeholders' just on the North Street area.

At the end of the meeting, John Stockdale, chair of Phoenix Action, commented: "A packed Town Hall public meeting says it all. There's a lot of interest in and concern about how the Phoenix and other sites in the town are being developed. We will tell the council they should start to proactively manage the town planning process and take back the initiative from developers.”

He continued: “We're not against development, but our councillors shouldn't be rushed into making wrong decisions. If the planning department lacks the necessary resources, it should recruit or hire them in, rather than short change us - and it needs to consult the community much more widely and effectively."

The main impact of the meeting was to make it clear that the people of Lewes care passionately about their town and that any plans for North Street and other sites should be considered with great caution and with far more genuine consultation with all residents.
