Sustainable Communities: Delivering through Planning

The planning system should:

  • deliver in a sustainable way key Government objectives such as housing, economic development, transport infrastructure and rural regeneration whilst protecting the environment;
  • create and sustain mixed and inclusive communities;
  • be transparent so that the right decisions are taken more quickly, with a set of rules that everyone can understand;
  • enable local communities to be involved much more positively than before; and
  • deliver a higher quality and better respected public service.

South East Regional Design Panel

The South East Regional Design Panel was established in 2002 and is a free to use design review service, available to a wide range of public and private organisations. Essentially, the Panel provides a clear indication of the strengths and weaknesses of a development proposal. We try to work at an early stage of a project before ideas and financial commitments are fixed. We find that getting the basics right brings efficiency in the longer term and gives the project every opportunity of achieving design excellence.

Sussex Express

Our local paper. Try a search on "Phoenix" in the news archive and you'll find some interesting results, for example, the Chamber of Commerce's decision back in 2003 to oppose a development of the site on the grounds that it would rob the county town of industrial land and the businesses that occupy it. Or our Council's recent decision to  report the results of last December's public meeting to the planning authority but will not be expressing a view on it. Cllr Michael Chartier said the planning process should prevail and that an application should not be judged before it had appeared. So how and when do we get a chance to comment?

Sussex Innovation Centre

The Sussex Innovation Centre (SInC) is one of the premier business incubators in the UK. Opened in 1996 it provides support for the creation and growth of technology and knowledge based companies in the South East.

Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings

The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings was founded by William Morris in 1877 to counteract the highly destructive 'restoration' of medieval buildings being practised by many Victorian architects. Today it is the largest, oldest and most technically expert national pressure group fighting to save old buildings from decay, demolition and damage. We advise. We educate. We campaign. We offer help when it's wanted and informed resistance when we are alarmed. We encourage excellence in new design to enrich and complement the historic environment.
