Lewes Climate Concern

Our town, well known for its green credentials, is the target of a year-long  campaign to ensure that every household is aware of the facts behind global warming. In this we’ll be working with the Sussex Express newspaper. Our job is to convince Lewes people that climate change is real and that we can all do something about it – it’s not too late. We aim to make Lewes a flagship town for climate change awareness.

Cape Newhaven

Oakdene Homes have finally released the first and second phase of this prestigious and exciting new redevelopment of the Marina at Newhaven. In total 600 new homes are planned along the waters edge, with stunning views over the English Channel. When completed, there will be restaurants, shops and many sporting facilities, making this the place to be and be seen. The Marina will undergo a transformation, as part of the re-development project offering an excellent alternative to Brighton Marina for those sailing enthusiasts.

Michael Royde, IFA

Michael Royde says "I have recently negotiated an opportunity to acquire the foremost, principally commercial, building in an exciting new development in Lewes, East Sussex.  Situated on the South Downs, Lewes is the County Town of East Sussex with a population of 17,000 inhabitants and a catchment area of approximately 100,000 people.  It is six miles from Brighton and is shortly to become the capital of the New South Downs National Park, which, within the next two years, is to be designated as a protected area.  There are no other developments of the scale and nature of the Phoenix Quarter in Lewes where property prices have grown substantially in the past few years and are likely to continue to grow in the future in line with other towns in the South East of England."

ATLAS ATLAS was set up in 2004 as a pilot scheme by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) to provide an independent advisory service to Local Authorities in London, and the wider South-East experiencing the pressures of increased development activity flowing from the Sustainable Communities Plan. ATLAS is part of the Planning Advisory Service (PAS). The team is being provided by English Partnerships.

LDC's One-Stop Shop

If your business is considering a large, or complex, development proposal, it will probably need a number of development consents, or licences, from Lewes District Council and also possibly from other public agencies. These consents can include planning permission; listed building or conservation area consent; approval under the building regulations; and licenses for alcohol sales, public entertainment and other matters. All this can be daunting for those wanting to carry out development, particularly small businesses, faced with meeting complicated, and sometimes contradictory, legal requirements. Lewes District Council is now offering a “one stop shop” service, so that you can get co-ordinated advice on all the necessary approvals from the local authority. This will provide a better service for our customers and reduce the risk of wasted time and effort in obtaining consents which are not compatible with each other.

Brewery Square, Dorchester

BREWERY SQUARE - DORCHESTER The regeneration of an 11.5 acre former brewery site, creating a new urban quarter in the heart of Dorchester. A project by Brewery Square Ltd - a waterhouse company.

Charles Style says "The site is, at 12 acres a very similar size to the Phoenix Quarter. The population of Dorchester at 17,000 is almost identical to that of Lewes. The density of residential uses is very similar to what we are proposing. The quantity and mix of other commercial uses is very similar and the planners and the people of Dorchester welcomed the scheme as a chance to regenerate a run down part of their town."

Department for Communities & Local Government - Planning

England is one of the most crowded countries in the world. Over 90 per cent of our population lives in urban areas covering just eight per cent of the land area. This makes how we plan for, and make decisions about, the future of our cities, towns and countryside extremely important. Good planning contributes to urban and rural regeneration, and helps to ensure that people have decent affordable homes in well-designed accessible environments whilst safeguarding our countryside. It is essential that we have an effective planning system to achieve our aim of creating sustainable communities. We are leading the way in reforming the planning system to make it simpler, faster and more accessible. The policy statement Sustainable Communities: delivering through planning sets out the Government’s aims. The reforms seek to change the culture of planning, making it a positive tool to steer development actively to the benefit of everyone.

Sustainable Communities: Delivering through Planning

The planning system should:

  • deliver in a sustainable way key Government objectives such as housing, economic development, transport infrastructure and rural regeneration whilst protecting the environment;
  • create and sustain mixed and inclusive communities;
  • be transparent so that the right decisions are taken more quickly, with a set of rules that everyone can understand;
  • enable local communities to be involved much more positively than before; and
  • deliver a higher quality and better respected public service.
