First, we promised to bring you results of our research survey as soon as they became available. The survey was designed to find out what the people of Lewes think about the proposed Phoenix development. Well over 300 people kindly completed the questionnaire – that’s over 10% of households. Enough to predict accurately the feelings of the population of our town. As we write this preliminary report, the data are being independently analysed by KCP – a Market Research Company based in Lewes. However we can give you a flavour of the results by reprinting a selection of random comments. The survey shows an emerging consensus for some sort of development on this site. The majority of respondents, however, have serious reservations that this scheme would be an overdevelopment of the site which will put an unacceptable strain on the town’s infrastructures and that it would pose a grave threat to the unique character of our historic town. Click here to read our preliminary report. Next, many of you will have received a copy of the Lewes Handbook, in which, with an application imminent, our MP Norman Baker makes a welcome addition to the debate regarding the Phoenix proposals. We will be commenting shortly on some of the points he has made. In the meantime, click here to read what he says. And on Monday 26th June. Lewes Matters sustainability team met with Matthew Bird, Lewes District Council's Sustainability and Energy officer, to explore policies and strategies relating to future developments in Lewes. Present at the meeting were also representatives from the Green Party, Friends of the Earth, and Phoenix Action. Click here to read the Council's recent Press Release on the subject. |
