MORE than 50 people attending a viewing of development proposals in Lewes gave plans for 204 apartments and commercial expansion at the bottom of North Street a mixed reception on Saturday.

The £40 million scheme was on show in outline form between 10am and noon at The White Hart with the intention of allowing the public to get a better view of the plans and discuss any issues relating them.
So successful was the exhibition that it could be staged elsewhere in the town for a longer period.
Lap Chan of MCP Architects told the Express on Monday: 'The day was hectic and very useful. There was a great of interest and debate.'
It was pointed out to viewers who criticised the look of the proposed riverside buildings that the drawings were indicative only so that the principles of the scheme could be properly discussed and evaluated.
Others welcomed the proposals with open arms and suggested that the area of Lewes in question needed them.
The scheme earmarked for Corporation Wharf and the northern part of the Phoenix industrial estate involves relocating existing businesses to other areas of the town and the construction of 204 apartments, a quarter of which could be affordable housing.
