Traffic Flow Taken directly from a board used at the recent exhibition of the developer's revised plans... "The creation of a new quarter allows for a comprehensive traffic plan. East Sussex County Council in conjunction with traffic engineers Owen Williams are in the process of undertaking a computerised traffic model of the whole of Lewes, this will be used to test the routing of traffic that comes in and out of the Phoenix Quarter and to find an optimum solution for reducing town centre traffic. At present all the heavy goods traffic, and other through traffic going into the area has to go up East street and down Little East Street. The new scheme that is being proposed will enable this to be redirected and for new buildings built on the Phoenix Quarter site to be designed with this in mind. Traffic arriving from across the Phoenix Bridge will be directed straight off the causeway into the site, by the means of a new junction that can act as a gateway into the historic core of the town. The new proposed visitor park and walk car park is located adjacent to this gateway to the town and can be approached by driving down Phoenix Place, this will stop a lot of traffic going into the historic core of the town looking for a parking space. Traffic leaving the site will be prevented from using Lancaster Street as a ‘rat run’ by the use of a no right turn signal when travelling up North Street. Brook Street will become one way only, into the site, with only emergency vehicles being able to exit the site in the other direction. As Brook Street is a very narrow street it would be detrimental to the residents of the Pells area if traffic used Brooks Street as a through route from the site. At the Junction of North Street and Phoenix Place traffic and pedestrians can be separated to allow a convenient way to walk from the town centre to the river. This traffic routing has yet to be tested and consulted on by East Sussex County Council, this will be done when the traffic model is finished, and is scheduled to commence in May 2006."
